Deciphering one of the most ambiguous terms of the season — holiday attire — can be tough for even expert fashionistas. Truthfully, I can count the number of holiday parties I’ve attended over the years on one hand, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t spent a sizable amount of time rummaging through my meticulously color-coordinated closet, attempting to curate the perfect outfit for the occasion. My life mantra is this: It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. If there are no further instructions listed on the invitation, I’d advise one to err on the side of caution and assume they should dress to impress. There’s really no one-size-fits-all answer as to what you should wear to these types of festivities, but I’ve picked out a few of my favorite dresses (and a gorgeous peacoat to match) from Macy’s to give you a base point when creating your perfect holiday party look.
You can never go wrong with a classic sheath dress. This stunner is fancy enough to make a statement, yet conservative enough to still be classified as work-appropriate. It comes in five gorgeous colors: Grey, Lighthouse Navy, Raisin, Red, and my personal favorite — Venetian Rose (a hot pink-ish hue). Pair this dress with silver or black heels and don your most extravagent pair of diamond earrings to complete the ensemble.
Depending on the atmosphere of your workplace (or alternatively, the venue the gathering is being held at), this outfit may or may not work for you. But for those with more lax dress codes, this glamorous Betsy & Adam A-line dress would make an excellent option for a holiday party. The deep Merlot color screams Christmas, and the soft, lace design coupled with a V-neck cut serves to accentuate all of your best features. LOVE!
For those who’d prefer to sport a more casual look to holiday parties, a sweater dress is a great option. This particular one is available in two colors: Black and Cherrywood, and features tiered ruffles at the sleeve to add a bit of pizzazz to the garment. I absolutely adore the heeled boots shown on the model above, but this could easily be paired with black or nude heels.
Complete the look:
In an ideal world, temperatures would fluctuate between the high 60’s and low 80’s year-round, ultimately eliminating the need for outerwear. Unfortunately, I have no say in our actual climate, so winters are pretty gosh darn cold no matter where you live (with the obvious exception being Florida). I found this peacoat at Macy’s last month and instantly fell in love with it. I ordered it in Black, but it also comes in Charcoal and Eggplant. It’s the perfect accompaniment to any holiday dress — and I guarantee this is a purchase you won’t regret.
