8 Tips to Help You Look and Feel More Confident in the New Year

There are few things I love more than working remotely. I can roll out of bed, throw on my comfiest pair of yoga pants and set up camp at the kitchen table, where I won’t have to talk another living soul for another couple of hours, at the absolute minimum. Some days, the only interaction I have with the outside world is a fleeting wave from the mailman or a shy grin from a passerby. It’s great — until it’s not, and homegirl loses all self-confidence and starts to forget who she is as a person (homegirl is me, BTW).

Do you want to know what the most important accessory a girl will ever have is? I’ll give you a hint: it’s not a designer bag nor is it stiletto heels. It’s confidence — or in more descriptive terms, the feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities. It’s incredibly easy to forget how beautiful and intelligent and funny and fabulous we are. I know I have from time to time, and I’m sure you have, too. But the truth is, even the most successful and self-assured people occasionally need a confidence booster, and it’s okay to admit that. I vow to do many things differently in 2018, beginning with loving myself unconditionally. I vow to make a conscious effort to look and feel the part of a woman who exudes confidence ALL the time. And most importantly, I vow to believe in myself, because if I don’t, then who else will?
In the spirit of the new year, I’ve compiled a list of 8 helpful tips that will undoubtedly help you look and feel more confident:

1. Kick those negative thoughts to the curb.

Presume that from this point forward, everything will go your way . The next time you take a look at yourself in the mirror, decide you wholeheartedly love what you see. Walk into a room and tell yourself that you are going to own it. Your brain is an insanely powerful tool; one that is capable of being reprogrammed at any given second. Train your mind to assume the best in every situation.

2. Find a positive mentor.

Whether you have a friend who just so happens to be doing an exemplary job at life, or a colleague that you’ve always admired, chances are, there’s an incredibly strong and confident lady (or man!) in your world that could serve as a positive role model. Science says you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with — so be sure to surround yourself with the type of people you strive to be like!

3. Get moving!

Exercise is a truly underrated feat that can help you look AND feel more confident. Not much of a gym-goer? Don’t let that deter you. There are TONS of free workout videos floating around on YouTube ranging in all different levels of ability. Buy a set of weights and set up a makeshift at-home gym. Go for a walk. You don’t have to be a fitness buff to reap the benefits of a good workout.

4. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself.

Personally, I feel the most confident when I dress for success. Instead of trudging to my desk in last night’s pajamas and disheveled hair on the days I work from home, I’ve made it a habit to don professional attire every single morning. I won’t lie — many times I would go days without brushing my hair. My signature long locks have always been difficult to maintain, and I’d jump around from one brand to the next, attempting to find a miracle product that would permanently tame the frizz and alleviate the dryness.

5. Start a gratitude journal.

On the first of the month, I started my own gratitude journal. Every single day (despite my mood or the events of that day), I write down three positive affirmations and two good things that happened to me in the last 24 hours. This not only forces you to focus on the happy aspects of your life vs. the not-so-great ones, but it will inevitably help boost your confidence. I highly recommend it.

6. Realize that life is about taking chances.

I’ve lost count of how many times over the years I really wanted to do something, but then decided against said activity because of fear. For me, 2017 was all about taking chances: moving across the country, giving love a shot, taking a chance on my career, etc. In my experience, one of the best ways to feel confident is to simply start doing things that scare you. Great things never came from comfort zones!

7. Quit comparing yourself to others.

This is SO important, not only for your confidence levels, but for your general sense of well-being. You, yes YOU, have a set of unique strengths that I guarantee someone else out there only dreams of having. If social media is bringing you down, take it upon yourself to unfollow anyone who makes you feel inadequate. We all reach milestones in life at different times, and that’s perfectly normal. It’s not a race to the finish line — it’s about enjoying the ride!

 

8. SMILE!

Never, ever underestimate the power of a smile. Even if you’re not feeling so great at the moment, fake it ’til you make it. It can boost confidence, change your attitude, offer a plethora of health benefits AND brighten someone else’s day. How cool is that?
